Diversity in the teacher workforce in Australia and the UK

Seminar 1 – May 8th 2025; Seminar 2 – June 19th 2025.

Join us for two online research seminars focusing on the topic of teacher workforce diversity in the UK and Australia. These seminars form part of a collaborative research project funded by the Warwick-Monash Alliance. The study examines issues relating to inequalities in the recruitment, retention and progression of teachers from underrepresented backgrounds, and examines the available data for studying this important area. As part of this research, the Warwick-Monash Alliance team will share insights from the project, providing comparative perspectives from both countries and creating space for discussion and engagement with a wider group educators, researchers and policymakers. The first session will examine teacher diversity through the lens of national workforce data and policy contexts, while the second will focus on research relating to the lived experiences of underrepresented teachers and share the work of current researchers in the field (including Prof Jay Phillips, Dr Sun Yee Yip and Dr Antonina Tereschenko). These seminars are not only designed to share emerging research findings, but also to initiate a dialogue concerning diversity in the teaching workforce. We invite attendees to engage, share their perspectives, and contribute to building a flourishing and representative teacher workforce.
